[Tours] [Courses]

The Oakhanger Project currently organises up to TWO tours (or expeditions )
a year.
More can be arranged if there is enough interest.
Isles of Scilly Tour
The first tour of 2003 was held on Isles of Scilly, which are located off
the SW coast of Cornwall. The party arranged to meet at St Mary's (the largest
island), and from this base, kayaking trips were made to some of the
islands. The weather this year was quite breezy, and therefore the
possibilities for an 'island hopping' canoe-camping adventure will have to wait for
another year. What a nice excuse to return to these beautiful islands!
^ Puffin Island by Samson
Our base was the Garrison Campsite on St Mary's which is only a 10 minute walk from the ferry terminal. The site has good facilities, (modern toilet/shower blocks, and laundry and dishwashing rooms), and it offers excellent shelter from any strong sea breezes.
During our stay, many of us were able to visit a number of the islands - even the non-canoeists, as there are excellent ferry services between the islands. Walking is a delight, as there are very few roads (and cars). However for the less able, there are bus and taxi services on St Marys, and there are some buggies on Tresco.
A further trip to the Isles of Scilly with be arranged for 2004. Register your interest by contacting the Project. Canoeing is not the only activity for this holiday. Island walks, photography, birdwatching, golf, sketching and painting were just some of the activities that were enjoyed by the group.

Bahamas Tour
This tour involves a trip to the Bahamas, to be held next year. The final date has yet to be announced, but please contact Oakhanger for the latest details.
The itinery:
Fly to The Bahamas (Freeport, Grand Bahama) via Miami. Spend first night in Freeport, to prepare kit, buy any last minute items, and have a final briefing over a meal. After a good nights sleep, we will be ready for an early start.
The next day we drive 96 km (60 miles) to Mc Lean's Town (located on the east side of the island), to start paddling our fully laden kayaks to the first campsite - a deserted island.
The next few days will allow our gentle passage from island to island, to eventually reach the islands of Abaco.
Throughout the trip we will be using Jocassi 2-person kayaks. These are very stable kayaks with plenty of room for our camping gear, and yet they are reasonably easy to manoeurve. Our campsites are beaches, and there will be plenty of time to swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and to explore the islands. Campfires wiil be used for some cooking, especially if you catch your own fish supper.
Each evening a debriefing will be held. and consideration will be given to a "thought for the day" to allow us the chance to increase our awareness and appreciation of the environment that we are experiencing
Qualified guides will be present throughout, and will offer any tuition required to make your trip enjoyable and safe
At the end of the trip. there is an option to spend additional nights on Grand Bahama - perhaps 'chilling out' Bahama style. Alternatively there are many shops and markets to visit. Or enjoy the many fine restaurants in Freeport and Lucaya.
The Bahaman people are great hosts, and the guides offer a wealth of knowledge for the area.
Kayaking in crystal clear seas is an experience not to be missed. Likewise camping on your own deserted islands is a dream come true. Also learn new skills as you explore the riches of God's creation around you, and visit new places and people.
The tour cost is £350.00 for a week, including kayak hire, guides, food and accommodation. This cost however, excludes the cost of flights to and from Grand Bahama.
